What kinds of evaluation designs are appropriate for KM interventions?

The type of evaluation design you use depends on the objectives of your KM intervention and your evaluation, as well as on the resources you have available to invest in the evaluation.

Strong evaluation designs include:

  • Taking before and after measures so you can see what changes have occurred over the duration of an activity or project - for example, surveying or interviewing users of the KM tools and techniques before and after using them
  • Having an intervention and comparison group which helps you assess what would have happened in the absence of your KM intervention

If it is not possible to have a comparison group and/or take before and after measures, you can strengthen the intervention design by:

  • Measuring level of exposure to the KM intervention
  • Collecting data from same participants at multiple times
